This is an old, used whetstone on a hardwood block from the Washita Mountain Whetstone Company. It still has a very long life ahead of it and is in good condition. I don't know the hardness of it but considering the 'smoothness' of the stone I'm guessing it is for the final polishing of the blade. Now, I could be way off on this, I'm just guessing. It's still a darn nice stone! The wood block is predrilled for hanging (needs a strap of some kind for that, or a hook), there is a chip/splintering out on the back, looks worse than it is but doesn't take away from the strength of the wood any. It isn't cracked down into the block anywhere. Measures 10-3/4" long overall. The stone itself measures 5" long.
